A therapy team providing Intensive Early Autism Treatment is micromanaged by highly skilled, well trained, and caring senior clinicians. We work one-on-one with children in their home, first establishing a fun, positive, and playful relationship. As children learn to cooperate, imitate, and attend to others, the focus turns to increasing other major skill areas including (but not limited to) language, socialization, play, academic, and self-help skills. Social play with peers and transitions into school environments are introduced and carefully managed as the child is ready. Individualized goals are broken down into manageable components based on the child’s learning preference. Providing treatment in this way, the therapy remains positive and children experience a lot of success.

Therapeutic effectiveness is continually monitored by measuring progress and by assessing the amount of fun the child is having during early treatment. The goal of the therapy is to have every child learn as many new skills as possible, maximizing his or her potential. Most children in Intensive and Post Intensive Autism treatment look forward to therapy because they have fun and are put in a position where they are successful. Targeting each child's signs and symptoms as opposed to treating "autism" specifically addresses each child's individual needs.

Other common elements of an ABA, Early Autism treatment program include teaching a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Sign Language, Social Stories, and/or Video Modeling. We continually make sure learning experiences are meaningful so generalization of skills to a child's natural environment occurs. Parent and caregiver training and involvement in the therapy process is key to generalization. We also help to coordinate community support, school consultation and other supports to maximize generalization of skills a child has learned.

I realize it is sometimes difficult to to differentiate
signs and symptoms which occur durning normal development from signs and symptoms that suggest Autism, Aspergers or PDD-NOS. It is usually better to err on the side of caution and have your child evaluated by someone who specializes in the developmental progression of children. Typical children can at times throughout their development show some signs or symptoms of an autism spectrum disorder. Some of the same signs and symptoms occur in children who have Attention Deficit Disorder, mood disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, learning delays, and other DSM-IV conditions.

Children with other conditions such as
Down's Syndrome or Cri Du Chat Syndrome, among others, may also have Autism in addition to their primary condition. Children with other conditions should be evaluated for autism if they show signs or symptoms of autism that are not accounted for by their primary condition. For example some children with Down's syndrome or Cri Du Chat are very social, if your child demonstrates significant impairments in social interaction they should be evaluated for the concurrence of autism.
